B. Smith Barbecues a Delicious Dish
in Detroit
Gaye Moore's passion for genealogy led to her discovery that diabetes had not only affected her father, but also every single relative on her mother’s side of the family tree. After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2003, Gaye knew it was paramount to control her blood sugar levels, but struggled to cook healthy meals after late nights in the office.
In Detroit, Gaye met B. Smith, who showed her that diabetes-friendly meals, even summer barbecues, can maintain their flavor and still be guilt-free. For her Healthy Menu Makeover, B. and Gaye grilled a delicious barbecue chicken coated with a diabetes-friendly maple-flavored barbecue sauce made with ingredients like sugar-free maple syrup and reduced sodium broth. To complement the chicken, B. created two different kinds of potato salad for Gaye – a vegetable potato salad with low-fat Italian dressing and a traditional potato salad with non-fat sour cream and low-fat mayonnaise. By making small changes in these recipes, Gaye is finally able to reintroduce these family favorites into her menu.
