B. Smith’s Healthy Menu Makeovers

B. Smith Bakes Up Healthy Family Favorites in Washington, D.C.

B. Smith took her Healthy Menu Makeover Program to the nation’s capital, with a tour stop in Washington, D.C.

B.’s makeover participant was D.C. resident, Gail Rutter. Gail was diagnosed with diabetes in July 2007 and was committed to maintaining healthy eating habits to control her blood sugar levels. She was also eager to learn to serve diabetes-friendly, tasty meals and favorites that the whole family could enjoy.

B. encouraged Gail to recognize that small changes to her diet could have a big effect on managing her diabetes successfully. First, she helped Gail to prepare a Pineapple-glazed Smoked Ham with Pineapple Clove Sauce using a low sodium baked ham and sweet juices from pineapples and oranges to add flavor. In addition, B. taught Gail that by making simple substitutions, such as using whole grain pasta in the family’s favorite Baked Macaroni and Cheese, and by choosing smart alternatives, such as sugar substitutes in her Poppy Seed Cheesecake, she could create a healthier menu for herself and for her family.
