Welcome to Taking Diabetes to Heart

Merck and celebrity chef Art Smith are teaming up on Taking Diabetes to Heart to give people a “recipe” to help better manage their type 2 diabetes.

As part of the program, Art is “dishing out” some of his favorite diabetes-friendly and delicious recipes and will be working with restaurants and food trucks across the country to make some of their most popular menu items healthier for people with type 2 diabetes.

Art’s Story

As a professional chef cooking up dishes for celebrities and for my restaurants across the country, I know how food can bring people together. But when I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2008, my
food-centered life was taking a huge toll on my body.

For years, my doctor had been telling me to lose weight and warning me that I was at risk for diabetes, but I never changed my lifestyle. I didn’t exercise, had very little energy, and weighed more than 325 lbs.

I eventually had a scare where I thought I was having a heart attack. When I went to my doctor, I learned I had type 2 diabetes, which put me at increased risk of serious complications, such as heart disease and stroke. This was the wake-up call I needed to get serious about my health. My father and grandfather both passed away from diabetes complications, so I know how important it is to stick to a treatment plan and make lifestyle changes to help better manage the disease.

I worked with my doctor and came up with a diabetes-management plan that was right for me. I also eat healthier now and have learned how to make some of my favorite dishes to be more diabetes-friendly. In addition to changing the way I eat, I also started exercising 5 days a week.

I’m happy to say that I’ve stuck with the plan my doctor and I came up with and have lost over 100 lbs! Most importantly, I now have my diabetes under control and I feel great.
